I had not known Toby all that long, but I will miss his kindness and his powerful, genuine presence. Thinking of you Beth.

An absolute pleasure to have known Toby over the many years at Shirley Boys High School. He always welcomed my visits to his classroom, displaying courtesy and genuine warmth.
His students constantly benefited from his knowledge, patience and enthusiasm for te reo.

I jave great memories of Mt Hunia taking us up north by train to ngaruawahia for manu korero. What and epic journey. We didnt have huge numbers or interest in Te Reo back then (i think around year 2000) Maybe two people in my class. Mr Hunia was a no nonsense honest man. E te ta, e Toby, haere atu ra e aku ranagatira, whakapiri atu ki tatou nei tupuna. E au te moe.

Matua Toby was one of my mentors as a beginning kaiako Maori back in 2004. He was humble and kind.
