Terry taught at Clifton Preparatory school in Durban, South Africa. His lessons were always fun, inspiring, well thought through and oft times conveyed with a glint in his eye. He was a well loved rugby coach to me also and I remember when Andrew was born to a very proud father. The world has lost a caring man.

Only heard now. What a loss. A man amongst men. He was my Math's teacher and Rugby Coach in South Africa. Got me started in rugby and believed in me. I still got the 1970 Natal Team autographs that he played in against the All Blacks. Thank you for everything Mr. Mehrtens. You will always be a part of my life.

Very fond memories of Terry during my teenage years playing tennis with the family in Kaiapoi and further afield. He had a warmth and an ease at connecting with people, and nearly 40 years on I still feel it. Thinking of you all Sandra, Andrew & family and wishing you the deepest condolences.

To Terry

You are a very special and humble man that served the Bromley School community relentlessly. Your generous spirit, kindness, empathy and selflessness left an imprint on our community that will never be forgotten. Thank you Mr Mehrtens for your love, wisdom, and leadership in which you served us. There are only fond memories from past students of the way you seemed to know each and everyone of them. Connecting with them, making them feel special and important.

Terry was a special person and character. I have been kept up to date with regards to Terry, in the past, through mutual acquaintances from the tennis club. My fondest memories of Terry were during the annual combined sports days held at Woodend when Tuahiwi, Waikuku and Ouruhia attended. As you can imagine a great deal of good natured banter took place. Terry will be missed by many.

MEHRTENS, Terry:
From 1991 - 2004. When he retired, Terry was the respected and loved principal of Bromley School. He was always courteous, friendly, fun and firm with a mischievous sense of humour which paved the way for a great atmosphere at school. He knew all the pupils by name, they knew he cared about them and in turn strove to be the best they could be. On behalf of his ex staff, ex pupils and friends of Bromley.
Thank you Terry, your time at Bromley will never be forgotten.
Lois, Secretary.
