I stopped by Jane's on Wednesday evening, October 25, and right away I knew something was terribly wrong when the door was locked, the shades were closed, and the only sound that could be heard was the occasional car going by on Stanmore. Minutes later, I learned that I missed Steve's funeral by just a few hours. Steve was a stand-out. For those of us who got to know him, we'll never figure how to fill the void that this loss leaves us with. There's a song that he really liked that had the lyrics, "You don't know what you've got 'til it's gone". Steve loved talking about his visits to America, and many times joked how I knew more about New Zealand than he did. What I do know for sure is my future visits to Christchurch will never be the same. Rest in peace, my good friend. You will be missed.

I've known Steve since he took over Jane's Bar back in the old days, many nights passed over a beer or two. many a car show and race meet. Such a big part of our lives, you will be sadly missed 'Butch' but you will not be forgotten. How could we - you were such a character. My partner Carolyn and I met in 'Janes' and had plenty of advice given including on my choice of Maher shoes which you always enjoyed. Love you Steve wherever you are - Gone too soon Mate. With lots of love Dave & Carolyn

I am sorry to hear of Butch's passing. We were school friends in late '60's & listened to the latest record albums at Kerrs Rd; he always had the best ones. He was a quiet, mannered lad in those days but later blossomed out!
Somewhere I have a photo of Steve by my Model A Ford in 1970 & about 10 years ago he recognised the car & myself at a Ford Day at Ouhuria Park; it was great to see him after all those years.
So long Butch.

Dear Karen and Eugene. I recieved this saddest news from my Mum. Karen, I remember that you were such warmth and strengh for me when I lost my brother and I want you to know that I am here for you now. Steven was such an enormous part of my life for a very long time. He taught me a lot about music and cars and many other things. My heart is broken that Steven is gone, the world is a little less whole now. Hugs to all those who had the chance to love him.

What a shock. Known Steve for over 30 years, first as a sales rep then as publican. I do hope his passing was an easy one for him. So sad to hear. Heard too late to attend his farewell.

With many fond memories Butch. One that brings a smile to my face is of a holiday in the Sounds where you exposed your legs to the sun after thirty years of hiding them - I remember cutting your jeans off for you to create shorts as you didn't own any.
Much love to you as you journey onwards now to create that special haven for your friends to gather again one day.
Heartfelt hugs to Ali and your family, from Sandra McAlpine.
