I knew him as a boy and then young man from cycling around Eastwood. We did a mountain bike ride from Wentworth Falls through Warragamba before he left to race in Europe. Not only was he a strong cyclist with a prodigious training capacity he was a very decent person and of good judgement.

I worked closely with Steve for several years. Great guy, ambitious for others, energetic and creative, always looking forward and upward. His ability and humanity were recognized by most and he won friends and admirers, but unrecognized or feared by a few who showed themselves shallow. Well done Steve for a life well lived and my condolences to those close to him now has gone.

My condolences to Katherine and family at the passing of a friend and academic colleague. I knew of Steve from colleagues at Sydney University and strongly encouraged him to accept our offer of a position at Massey. Our consequent research together was a source of pride to us both. Assisting Steve and Robert respond to difficulties with statistical interpretations of blood sampling and testing is a more recent connection. Rest in Peace Steve.
