Steve/Stevie/Steviekins. My road trip, bush walking, wine drinking, vocabulary and language buddy. Accents and insults, belly laughs and straight talking. A man of truth, fact and science. Compassion, wit and humour. A gentleman, always walking on the street side. I was privileged to have had your friendship.
Goodbye precious man

Steve enriched the lives of those who knew him and I am fortunate to count myself among them.
He was an eternally youthful, unencumbered free spirit who travelled the world to expand his understanding of different cultures and gain perspective on his own life. He embodied the quote "Life is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page". Literature and travel were his passions, along with philosophical and political discussions, of which there were many.
This world was made a better, kinder, and infinitely more interesting place by Steve's presence. I shall deeply miss his humour, intelligence, irreverence, kindness, loveable eccentricities, knowledge and educated wit. He was unique, the kind of friend you encounter once in a lifetime if you are lucky, as we were.
Thinking of you all,
Sandra

Like everyone else I am also saddened by the loss of Steve, a dear friend for over 40 years. He was such a warm, kind and cheerful man, interested in everything and everyone. I loved his easy sense of humour and infectious laugh. I will forever miss our frequent phone chats when we discussed our recent favourite reads, the state of the world, and reminisced. Love to his family and his many friends - we were so lucky to know him.

Our dear friend Steve, such a caring, intelligent, kind soul. He trod lightly on our world. Eschewing material processions, embracing a simple way of living. Continually striving through reading, discussion, travel and photography to better understand humanity and our place in the universe. He drew people in with an innate ability to put others at ease. Quick to remind others of the great qualities they possessed but reluctant to acknowledge his own. An inestimable host always keen to please those around him and keep drinks topped up.
And ALWAYS a beaming smile, and wicked sense of fun, equally ready to entertain or diffuse confrontation.
We have been so truly lucky to have shared a path with such a good friend. One that can be thoughtful one moment and completely silly the next. Someone to share time, sometimes saying a lot, other times, saying very little but always able to say anything, without judgment.
We send our love to Chris and Rob, Grant, and families. Also Michael, Marian, Ann, Sandra, Lyndal, Jane and Barry and all those many people in Rangiora that kept him close. He remarked fondly about the community he had chosen to live in and their warm embrace had kept him there.
We will have a drink to his memory, friends
Trish and Tracey xx
