Very belatedly Steve, your presence on the Chatham Islands was actually unique a true technician in all aspects of telecommunications - the first truly mobile phone using a country set in your truck - looking after Radio Weka in the studio with egg cartons as sound dampers - fixing the stuck CD player as required and projecting your personality in so many ways. Scott base will miss your extraordinary talents too - when things got technical you were the go to guy - and you even made the Pole you lucky bugger ! A rarely talented individual and all round salt of the Earth RIP.

The majesty of Antarctic “grips” quite a few people and some are lucky to be able to return. Steve was one of those. However whilst some staff that get to return time, and time again with somewhat slim justifications, Steve has worked with diligence and enthusiasm on all his visits to the Ice.
I have been honoured to know Steve. His dedication to a positive outcome and his “can do” attitude (even when there are trying circumstances like repairing a power cable in a blizzard) are Legendary. Few are like him. Many will aspire to emulate his enthusiasm and drive. They will have to be exceptional to be compared to Steve.
It is tragic that someone as magic as Steve has been taken from us as early as he has been, but I hope the treasured memories of Marie and their children Tim and Elizabeth will last and provide comfort. May the ‘love' that Steve showed all his workmates, and the Antarctic, pay dividends for the family.
It has been a privilege to have known Steve, and an honour to have worked with him.
Rest in peace mate.

LOCKE, Steve — It will be hard to find a better person than Steve was. Nothing was too much trouble for him to do a good turn for others. He is going to be sadly missed. Loved son-in-law of Elizabeth Low, and brother-in-law of Julie Low and Anne and Angelo Paterlini.
