Shirley YOUNG Obituary

On January 8, 2026 at Terrace View Retirement Village in Ashburton, surrounded by family, in her 90th year. Much loved wife of the late Alan. Dearly loved mother and mother-in-law of Glenice and David Brant, Sandra and Ian Marr, Murray and Robyn, Kevin and Della, Lindsay and Tia. Adored Nana of her 17 grandchildren and great-nana of her 13 great-grandchildren. Messages to the Young family, PO Box 472, Ashburton 7740. A celebration of Shirley's life will be held at our Chapel, cnr East and Cox Streets, Ashburton, on Friday, January 16, commencing at 1.30pm, followed by interment at Ashburton New Lawn Cemetery.

On behalf of the Usmar family like to offer my sincere condolences on the passing of Shirley - may she rest in peace. Shirley and her late husband Alan were life long friends of my parents - both hold a special place in our family. Growing up in Ashburton as a lad the Young's house was a short bike ride away so I was there frequently visiting my good mate ( Shirleys son Murray ) most days. Memories include - Shirleys prodigious production of home made jams and preserves - huge number of Xmas cards strung up demonstrating just how well loved and connected Shirley and her family were - Shirley washing all the nappies whilst my parents were away collecting my youngest sister Stephanie from the hospital.

Shirley was a special lady who with her husband Alan raised a special family that supported ours over the years.
