Dearest Sarah, Michael and John,
Whenever I think of the happy times I spent with you and Shirley, I always remember the wonderful summer holidays at your bach in the Coromandel. Shirley, tanned and glamorous in her swimsuit, was always curious, alert, witty, a great cook, and lots of fun to be around. She will be missed. Thinking of you. With love from Caroline xxx

There is an ache in my soul. My half-sister Shirley is dead, another gap in the fabric of family. What has been cannot be again.

I have only known Shirley for the last 15 years or so since she went to live at the Summerset Facility. It was through the Anglican Ministry to the residents there that I came to know her reasonably well and she became a friend whom I visited on a regular basis.
Shirley was such an interesting person and I enjoyed my visits very much. We talked about all manner of things including family, history, fashion and any current events.
She talked with pride about her children and grandchildren and all the achievements gained
She loved it when you as a family came to Palmerston North and took her away for a few days. I knew she was thought of as we discussed the flower arrangements that regularly appeared from a member of her family

I send my sincere sympathy to you all as you morn the loss of your loved Mother and Grandmother who would have I assume, given you all a very stimulating and invigorating environment in which to grow and learn as young people.

Fondest memories
Karen

Shirley was head of General Books at Bennett's Bookshop where I joined the staff straight out of university in 1986. She was an amazing first boss - she could be stern, funny, very encouraging, and so knowledgeable about the books and her customers. Her influence on me has stood me in good stead ever since as remembering her training I still strive to keep busy, do my best and think about the big picture - you never knew when she would appear round a corner and catch you reading! Thank you Shirley. Rest now.

Sending my condolences to all the families. I worked with Shirley for several years in Bennett's Bookshop where she was a valued member of the staff in the general book department downstairs. We became good friends but have lost touch in later years.
