Russell SYKES Obituary

SYKES, William Russell:
ONZM, FMLS
Born Walsham-le-Willows, Suffolk, 13.10.1927. Died at Nurse Maude Hospice, Christchurch, NZ, 5.1.2018. Bill was the son of the late Miriam (nee Russell) and Alfred Sykes, brother of the late Rosemary, father of Julian and Claire, grandfather of Amelia, stepfather to Katrinka, Justin and Louise, husband of the late Betty, the late Shona, and of Peggy Kelly. He gathered around him a loving family including Marnie, his daughter-out-of-law and all our very significant others. His family, friends and botanical colleagues were very dear to him. Our family thanks everyone who helped us care for Bill during the last few years of his long, adventure-filled life. In memory of our beloved, a single stem – foliage or flower – may be brought to his service; there the offerings will be combined to make a botanically rich wreath to honour him. Messages may be addressed to The Family of Bill Sykes, c/- 19 London Street, Christchurch 8013. Donations to Nurse Maude Hospice would be appreciated and may be made at the service. A Funeral service for Bill will be held in the John Rhind Chapel, entrance off London and Whitmore Streets, Christchurch, on Tuesday, January 9, at 1.00pm.

I will never forget the many wonderful conversations Bill and I had about Raoul Island and its flora & fauna at the Landcare Research lunch table. The world has lost a treasure - he touched the heart of many and will remain in our thoughts!

The world would be a better place if there were a lot more like Bill!
