Robert LONG Obituary

Bob passed away on June 26, 2023, aged 99. Tramping and tennis partner to his late wife Betty, marvellous dad to Jenny (deceased) and David, father-in-law to Ernest and Kath, and much loved Papa to Fiona and Belinda; Rebecca, Torrens, Jethro and Bridget. Dedicated mathematician, teacher, bridge, chess, hockey, cricket and tennis player, gardener, tramper and a late start skier. Many thanks to the staff at Ngaio Marsh. Robbie and Betty were wonderful people. I have many happy memories of holidays and tramping the Routeburn with them. Robbie was such a kind and generous man. I still make, what we always called "Betty´s sultana cake" and my girls love it.

I remember Bob firstly as a very dry lecturer of mathematics at Canterbury Uni in 1974. I next recognized Bob at Chch Bridge Club in 2022. In the intervening 48 years he had of course aged but I recognised him immediately. We only spoke briefly but it was a delight to see him again and an inspiration to see Bob still playing senior bridge in his very (very) late 90's. He still had the same dry style and was obviously still very mentally alert. Rest in peace.
