I learned Coastal Management at as an International Student at UC (2005-2009) from Deirdre Hart who learned it from Bob Kirk. Met him a few times then, and I could feel his strong passion for keeping the coastal areas intact and understanding the complex dynamics took place in there. Such a great Professor.

My deepest condolences to the Kirk Family. Rest in Peace, Bob.

The end of an era as big as his father as far as I'm concerned. Mate, mentor, exemplar and good Kiwi. It started when Ruth and Bob were sweethearts at Linwood High two years ahead of me, a nutter surfer from Sumner! Studied with Bob at UC and met occasionally. Never forgotten.
Fond condolences Judy and family

News of Bob´s passing has just reached me in the UK. Bob was a kind and inspiring lecturer of mine in the late 80s, when I took his master´s geomorphology course. It was challenging, to say the least, for someone who´d always struggled with physics, but Bob´s kindness and patience meant I did ok in the end. His field trips were inspirational and I still have vivid memories of them (eg. Seeing the ship´s ballast - sandstone rock - from my hometown area lying on the shore at Kaikoura). I live by the sea now and daily read the waves and observe the longshore drift, thank you Bob! He leaves a legacy of so many grateful students, whose lives he most certainly changed. His passion for the coast was truly inspiring, although he once shared with me that it was mountains that were his true landscape love - he´d made the coast his life´s work so that he could enjoy the mountains free from work stresses. Enjoy the mountains now Bob! My sincerest condolences to his dear family and valued colleagues.
