Robert FINLAY Obituary

FINLAY, Robert James:
Our beloved Robert died Tuesday, July 11, aged 68. An extraordinary husband to Roma and adored father of Emma and Susanna and their families Gareth and Kathryn and Menno, Amelia and Sander. Eldest son of Jim and Shirley, Robert was the caring and much loved brother of David, Anne and Karen. A wonderful grandad, brother-in-law and uncle with great love for his family and friends. A poet, a teacher, a mediator and a champion of justice. We will miss his sense of humour, his huge heart and his passion. A man who left his mark on the world. To all those who have cared for Robert and supported us on this journey we are so thankful. We will gather to remember Robert at Rossendale, 100 Old Tai Tapu Road, Christchurch, on Monday, July 17, at 11.00am. We welcome you to join us. Until then Robert will be at home.

Roma, and all the family, my love and sympathy at this sad time. Rob was an important part of my young life, from Darfield High days, and I am so grateful for having known him. May his passion for justice and delight in life continue on in all who loved him. I am currently in the Uk otherwise would have come down from Wellington for the celebration of his life. Dear Roma, My sincere condolences to you and your family at this sad time. The last time we met was at the Hillmorton High School 50th celebrations. My enduring memories of Rob are his genuineness with all people and his wonderful sense of humour (he understood the Goon Show silliness which we lapsed into on many occasions). My thoughts are with you.
Kindest regards
Richard

Rob - quite one of the nicest men who ever walked this earth. Who will ever forget his wonderful compassion, intelligence, enquiring mind, passion for justice, energy and wonderfully wicked sense of humour.

Dear Roma, my heart goes out to you and your wider family. Thinking of Rob, across the 50 or so years since we all first met him, conjures up a gentle, kind, considerate, positive man who genuinely cared for the welfare of others. My thoughts are with you at this time of such great loss. Much love, Blanche xx
