Richard Symons Obituary

Richard Ian Symons, 89, of Morgan Hill and South Lake Tahoe, California passed away on November 2, 2025.

Dick was born to parents Henry and Sally Symons in San Francisco. Following graduation from Burlingame High School, he enlisted in the Navy for a three-year tour of the Pacific as a Fire Controlman. He worked with fire control systems, including radar,
missile, and gun systems, and was responsible for the electronics involved in targeting and engaging enemy threats.

Upon discharge he married Susan Eliel in Chicago. Dick and Sue went on to have four daughters, Elizabeth, Nancy, Juli, and Yvonne.

Dick worked at IBM for 33 years as a programmer and analyst and worked in New York, San Jose, Connecticut, New Jersey, Thousand Oaks, and Morgan Hill. He retired in Morgan Hill.

Dick was involved with dog showing. He and his wife showed Belgian Tervuren in dog obedience, tracking, agility, and confirmation. His dogs had titles from Canada, Mexico, and Bermuda, making them international Champion UDT (top obedience title) dogs. Dick also had the dogs certified as therapy dogs and volunteered for 26 years taking his dogs to local hospitals. Dick's commitment to dogs was so strong he taught dog obedience for over 40 years in the San Jose area. He was dedicated to helping patients, and is respected in the dog community by students and dog trainers.

The great outdoors called to Dick, and he spent endless hours enjoying his two and half acre property in Morgan Hill. After his dogs received their tracking titles, he volunteered to lay track for other dog enthusiasts so that their dogs could accomplish what his dogs could.

Richard was predeceased by his parents, Henry and Sally. He is survived by his sisters, Patrica Nicholson from San Francisco, and daughters Elizabeth Symons from SouthLake Tahoe, Nancy Regan from Sun City, AZ, Juli Pywell and Yvonne Graser of Roseville; his eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and Yetti (his last dog).

I can still hear Dick's voice in my head, telling me about (dog) scenting. Always willing to share his knowledge, a patient gentleman -a man I'm better for knowing. He was a great colleague at both PAFTA and SCDTC.

I knew Dick from his many years with Santa Clara Dog Training Club. He and I worked together to organize the Therapy Dog International tests, he was the evaluator and I the organizer. He is responsible for getting many, many therapy dogs out into the community helping others. Dick and I also tracked together and he was a wonderful mentor, telling me about his experiences and helping to guide me on my tracking journey. He was always willing to share his perspective. He and Sue were generous with their time and volunteered at various events and even let us use their property once for rattlesnake training. Good people. That's how I think of both Dick and Sue.

Dick was the most patient handling instructor. I was his worst student-I showed up every Tuesday for his class and he was just so wonderful I didn't give up-and from never going to a dogshow to showing at Westminster-well, it was all because of him. I am SO thankful I was able to share how much I appreciated him and even brought snowflake my now 10 year old Terv to say hello-He trained her mom Shelby 15 yrs ago then her. (well we know he was actually training us) Huge hugs to the family for getting Dick to be able to see his friends at RBTF in Dixon. Forever grateful.
