Hello Christina, sorry to hear of Rex's passing.
Lance and Dianne Carey.

I met Rex 45 years ago during his Auckland sojourn -'blip'.
I didn't get to see him in later years however we stayed in touch.
Rex was my neighbour living opposite on the slopes of Mt St John. I was an adult student studying commerce.
We could run from the crater along Market Rd through Puriri Drive to Cornwall Park around One Tree Hill and back. When super fit include Summiting One Tree Hill and back to Belvedere St.
Rex's advice to me at only 23 or 4 was 'Robert LIVE your life'. Looking back, I believe at that young age Rex really understood life & death and the Passage of TIME.
I was invited to watch an All Blacks game at 3am. They had stayed up all night.
One day Rex and Beverley individually told me 'We are CHRISTCHURCH people'. Xmas Day 1979 they were on the Cook Straight ferry back to their beloved Canterbury.
One freezing cold dark morning we left Ilam and they introduced me to Mt Hutt. I've visited the Mountain many times since.
I remember an early fundamental business choice and major decision Rex made. Whether to start the business in the Mall with guaranteed foot traffic and having to hand over a percentage of turnover to the Land Lord OR the Arcade? Take the risk of then little foot traffic but the business at least could keep its earnings. Rex backed himself and his craftsmanship.. foot traffic did come!
I became a Chartered Accountant. I'm in awe that Rex was in business for 40+ years balancing people & financial skills. Its a massive achievement.
The TR6 gave some style and panache however I think Rex had a Lamborghini intelligence. Rex was so understated and low key but always had the right words and Common Sense - a wise Council for me which I'll greatly miss.
One day I was sitting near Rex at his home Workshop when he turned to me and said 'You are sitting in HIS (Mr BIGS) chair!! They had a very close bond. As far as I know he never got another dog.
I was comforted by the LIVE STREAM -thanks Christina. To see the Aroha surrounding Rex - the love of family and two men speaking from their hearts.
Your Divine Appointment came to soon Rex for those of us let behind. A real loss.
Rex in Latin means King - so their were a couple of fiefdoms! ha!
To see everything Rex gave out came back to him in those last few weeks. Family and friends were Council and with him to the end to give him Love & Peace - his special affirmation and mantra at the end of every conversation.
I hope there has been a massive reunion in the next world; relatives, Gordon & Brian - good men whom I was lucky enough to meet.and MR BIGS!
Today would have been Rex's 69th birthday - now anniversary. My life was the better for having met Rex.
Dear friend I never did quite get the reality of passing TIME. I'm stuck with that Egyptian River - De-Nile.
Rex with sadness but good memories I say goodbye and Godspeed.
I'm looking out at the crater we once ran over.
Till we meet again,
Robert Bell

The news of Rex passing is crushing for many. With sympathy i pay my respects to his family.
Simply said Rex is highly regarded by family, his community, friends and work colleagues. This news comes as a great loss to those he had dealings with.
Myself he's a man I've always looked up to with regard to integrity, how to live my life and conduct myself.
I know I'm not alone with feeling this way.
Rex will not be alone - Its the pearly gates for a man like that. Rest in Peace REX. You are not man who'll ever be forgotten.

Rex you were a wonderful generous man and I will miss you deeply. Thanks for the 36 odd years of fun and laughs ,you introduced me to live rugby games and I went on to become a staunch Canterbury rugby supporter and who could forget the after game debriefs , the friends l have met through the Mapies touch teams and late night bike rides on the tricky Kate Shepard path in botanical gardens - awesome .
You made our wedding rings and they will always be treasured.
There´s so much more I could add but you were loved and touched many people.
Peace and Love Clive and Paula
