Ray helped me land my very first Taupo rainbow, from the Groin Pool on the Waitahanui, one day in late 1971. Though it was not long after dawn, he insisted on our walking back to the car park, and toasting the event with cans of beer, from his car boot. I have fished at Taupo every year since, bumped into Ray a few times in the seventies, and have never forgotten how his excitement for me made this one of the most memorable moments of the thousands I have enjoyed on those waters. My condolences to his family and friends.

My condolences - Ray was a prominent businessman in Auckland and I spent some time with him when I was MD of Sheffield Consulting. He was fairly close to my business partner, the late John Lill. Long after Ray had retired, I was at a conference at Tongariro Lodge. Getting up at dawn I walked along the river and there was Ray, fishing for Trout. We reminisced and he then caught a large Rainbow which he gave to me. I had it for breakfast with my colleagues and they were so impressed by what they called a "networked Trout" Ray obviously had a great life and was such a positive person. RIP Ray
