I worked closely with Randal when he was in Invercargill, and I was in D.M.E.O. Dunedin. I held Randal in high regard as a workmate and a good bloke. Appreciated his sense of humour as well. I remember him once saying to a young staff member who was looking at a newspaper, "Hand me the racing page lad, as I have 10/- and I wish to invest it wisely!"
I was saddened to learn of his passing, and deeply regret being unable to attend his service.

It was sad to hear of Randal's passing away.
Deapest Sympathy to family. I worked with Randal first at Dunedin Loco office and then two years at Invercargill Loco Office where Randal was my boss.He encouraged me in my career as a clerk. Randal had a great sense of Humor and was a man whom I had a lot of respect for. RIP.

I have been thinking about what to write about Randal all day.Suffice to say he was a gentleman, a family man who had great principles. It was my pleasure to work with Randal and i learnt much from him.
It came as news to me that his nickname was bubbs. I carried that nickname with me for 60 years something that really , really brassed me off. I wonder if bubbs senior felt the same way ??

I first met Randal on 15 January 1962, that is when I started work at the Locomotive Supervisors Office, Dunedin. Randal was an absolute gentleman and guided us young cadets through the rights and wrongs of office work, he had the total respect of all the staff, mainly because of his work ability. It is with sadness I here of his passing

Reflecting upon my association with Randal, it goes back 56 years. This in itself is frightening, and strangely because my working relationship and respect I will always hold for this man is so vivid in my mind, as though it were only yesterday.
Randal was the Section Offiver on the Time Desk at Dunedin Locomotive Depot, and I was his off shute, or boy as Randal related to me as, with my collating of his extending of the employees time sheets.
Randal was an extremely intelligent man, with clear precise writing skills. His dedication to work, along with his sense of humour, and being able to relate to all people, is still very paramount in my mind. He had definite leadership skills, and could define the boundaries between work and fun.
His principles along with his memory will always remain with me.
Randal would have been proud at the enlightenment of his life to those gathered at his funeral service, being delivered by his loving and sincere family. Duncan's eulogy of his fathers life from its very first inception, with the exacting detail of locations and events was truely amazing. In fact the entire service made me feel proud and honoured to be a part of. Every one did so well.

Bubs was an undoubted character who added so much to family gatherings! We are all the poorer for his passing, but inestimably the richer for having had his presence and influence in our lives.
All our love to Margot and the family in the days and weeks ahead.
May he rest in peace, and rise in glory.
