Another face in the firelight, Phil. Thank you for your contribution to New Zealand music and thanks for the past decade or so when I had the privilege of getting to know you at Naseby and Te Aroha.

Thank you for sharing stories through the music Phil. You drew colour in the grey and shed light on the shade. Bella

Thank you for the music. You leave the planet in the sure knowledge that you added value. Fond memories.

We will miss Phil's great music and dance calling at our Moonlight hall barn dances. Our sympathy to Phil's family.
Trevor & Gail Johnston and the Moonlight Community (& Phil's mate Will Millar)
Oh my dear Trevor!!! I was just talking with him on face book a couple of days ago!! his last message was that he was going in to the hospital for some more check ups. He was a great New Zealand character and I will miss not seeing him when next I go back. Trevor we are all on a certain time line and it makes me realize just how important every day is. I am off to open my March show on Salt Spring Island, I have a couple of resident Irish musicians joining me and I will raise a glass to Phil's contribution to the Folk world of music, poetry and all the good things of life that a fellow like Phil left us. Phil has passed like a whisper amid all the raving politicians that saturate the air waves. I will play his music this weekend to drown out the useless chatter from people who could use a piece of his big soul. Here's to you Phil thanks for all the years of honest New Zealand storytelling. Here's to you and yours Trevor I hope to get another visit soon. Will

E te whanau pani e koro e kui ma
E ko
Hoea ra to waka wairua, ki a Hine-nui-te-po
Ki tua, i te arai, ki te tini, ki te mano
Tenei te mihi, aue katahi ko koe, he pukumahi
He kaitito waiata rongonui, mo te katoa o Aotearoa
Tangi tonu ahau, aue te mamae o taku ngakau
Maringi noa nga roimata, heke iho te hupe
Haere atu ra, ki to tatou tupuna matua
Moe mai ra, i to moenga roa
I nga ringa, i Te Atua
E kore ahau e wareware i to kanohi i to reo waiata
Po marie
(Tune is Time to say Goodbye)
