I am very sorry not to have seen the notice of Peter's death, and am disappointed at not having been present to express to Robin and the family in person at the funeral both Rosemary and my condolences.
Peter was instrumental in beginning Gastoenterology as a subspecialty in Christchurch. He played a critical role in our team, nursing it through its infancy, as we were forced to adapt radically to the rapid succession of new developments which were occurring- in endoscopy, and in the diagnosis and management of GI disorders. He had endless energy and was irrepressible; his cheerful, and even at times cheeky, insistence on not being put down was essential in establishing the recognition of the specialty. Now it has expanded far beyond our wildest dreams in those early days, as stubborn issues are being named and addressed.
The whole community owes him a great debt of gratitude for his contribution.
