I felt a special connection to my Uncle Paul - though I think a lot of people did, because he just had that way about him. He was always genuinely happy. His smile and his giggle were infectious, and when you talked to him, you knew he was really listening. He had such a gift for giving advice that came from both his heart and his wisdom.
When I was little, Uncle Paul lived with us for a while as he went back to college for nursing school. I remember him as a jokester - always ready to play when he had time - but also a diligent student. He loved to tell us about what he was learning, especially the medical procedures and surgeries. Unfortunately for my mom, these stories often came up at dinner. I can still hear her saying, "Paul, we´re eating!" And he would just laugh and say, "I´m getting to the good part!"
One of my favorite memories was from when I started high school. We had this huge rainstorm, and the drainage system at Boca Ciega just couldn´t handle it. Water filled the areas between the buildings, and soon it was flooding the hallways. Eventually, they sent us to the auditorium and let us make a phone call. I called home, and Uncle Paul answered. He said, "Sure, I´ll come get you!" What I didn´t know was that his car - an old Rambler - actually floated. When he pulled up, the wheels barely touched the ground in places, but somehow, we made it home safely. That was Uncle Paul - always ready to show up, even if he had to float to do it.
I always admired his faith and his dedication to our Lord. That faith wasn´t just something he talked about - he lived it. During my dad´s final days, Uncle Paul was instrumental in helping me through. He spent the night in hospice with me and taught me so much about prayer and about what it really means to be with someone in their final moments. It was beautiful, and it had a lasting impact on me.
I was blessed to see him a few days before he passed. I´m so grateful to have known and loved my dear Uncle Paul. He will be greatly missed, but I take comfort knowing he´s at peace - and probably sharing stories, laughter, and that unforgettable giggle in heaven.
