Last surviving Spitfire pilot of No. 485 Squadron RNZAF
Passed away peacefully on February 27, 2026, aged 101. Devoted husband of the late Gladys (Harper). Son of Marion (nee Turner) (dec) and Ollie Hunter (dec). Nurtured and guided by Lizzie (dec) and Don McLean (dec). Loved father and father-in-law of Susan and Pete (dec), Jean and David (dec), and Peter. Grandad to Kathryn and Jason, Suzanne and Jon, Arthur and Michelle, Jackie and Jaimie, Andy and Julie-Marie (dec). Best great-grandad of Aimee and Matt, Alex and Freya, Charlie and Daisie and Lily. A man of quiet strength, humility, kindness and courage. He never sought recognition, yet earned the respect of all who knew him. Wise and discerning to the end, he guided his family with unwavering love and support. He leaves a legacy of integrity, resilience, compassion and deep faith. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered. A special thanks to all the health care workers who have treated Owen with love and respect and helped him defy the odds when others gave up. To the staff at Charles Upham Rest Home, from housekeeping to some very special nurses and carers, thankyou from Owen's family. As per Owen's wishes, a private cremation has taken place.
