Lauri Clemens rang yesterday. Sad news. Though my mother and Gus's mother were cousins we knew each other best as maths teachers. Gus was very involved in national examination assessment. He lead the development of the Canterbury scheme for internal assessment of School Certificate mathematics. His leadership influenced teaching practice across New Zealand.

I've been looking at photos of Gus from varsity rugby teams and from the Restall family tree publication. We have not been in contact in recent years but I remember his fellowship and friendship with warmth and affection. He was a fine man. My condolences to all his family.

Dear Gus's Family,
We met your wonderful family at the Restall reunion in Lincoln. Very sad to hear of Gus's passing. I have just rung Michael Murtagh in Wellington to pass on the sad news relating to his cousin. We all received Graeme and Janice's Fruit cake recipe after a beautiful luncheon. Ninety-one is a great age to reach but too soon for someone very loved. My sincere condolences and love, Lorraine Clemens, nee Manion

Dear Suzanne and family, sending condolences on the passing of your Dad Gus. He will leave a gap in your life. It was lovely to catch up few years ago, and at the numerous Mathematics occasions. He and Bill did such a lot in that field. Sincerely Linda Ellwood.

I was fortunate to be principal at Hornby HS 2008-2015 and met Gus several times then and in later years. What I remember is Gus's gentlemanly demeanour and his deep, sincere interest in the wellbeing of the school. And, of course as a fellow player, he always had encouraging words.
My condolences to the family.

Gus was a very generous and loveable character. When teaching in the 1980s at Papanui High School, he was very supportive and helpful to me. Gus was a gifted teacher, mentor and Deputy Principal. nothing was too big or small for him to handle, always done willingly and with a smile. I shall always remember him with much fondness .

A great teacher, he was very patient and caring. Taught me in the 6th and 7th form. Met him also later in my teaching career. Always had a ready smile. RIP

Sincere condolences on the passing of Gus. He is remembered by me as a staff mentor for me in his role as Principal of Hornby High School and a man who enjoyed a joke and had a ready smile. RIP Gus
