Neil FLEMING Obituary

FLEMING, Neil Donald:
Died on June 16, 2022, suddenly at home in Christchurch, aged 82 years. Much loved husband of Faye for 59 years. Loving Dad to Carol, Wendy, Nicola and Grant. Father in law to Colin, Donald, Dion and Lara. Beloved Grandad to Laura, Hamish, Sally, Nicola, Tim, Scott, Vicki, Ashlee, Tamara, Jack, Phoenix, Shea, Scarlett and partners. Great-Grandad to Jessica, Katie, Moana, Tane, Thomas, Annabel, Beau, Allie and William. Neil and Faye started as a team of two, but quickly became a team of six which grew to a team of 32. Our team has lost a great leader, teacher and mentor. Neil lived his life to the end with great empathy, integrity, generosity and humour and will be sadly missed by many. A private cremation will be held with family and a public celebration of Neil's life will be held on Wednesday, June 22, 1.00pm, at The Great Hall, The Arts Centre, Worcester St, Christchurch.

Our sympathies to dear Faye and Neil's large family and friends.
New Zealanders reminded me of the essential importance of family and relatives.
In the early 1990's I surveyed several hundred educational developers from around the world and received 331 completed quetionnaires in my office in Halifax, Canada. Only one reply came with a letter...from a Mr. Neil Fleming of Christchurch. Of course the letter congratulated me for my initiative...and informed me as to how I could improve my research! That would be Neil!
Months later we discovered we were cousins, both descendents of the Flemings of Faskine Farm in Scotland. (My mother was Marion Fleming.)
Twenty-five years of joyous visits with Neil and Faye involved my brother Barry, his wife Judy, my late brother Ian and his wife Carole. We all became very close to Neil and to Faye.
Neil and Faye have a particular way with children and our Adam, William, and Marianne loved it when they visited with us in five different locations over the years. Our children have always admired how Neil and Faye truly engage with the youngest through to the oldest people in a room.
To Neil, cousin, I say bravo for living life to the fullest and touching so many lives on a personal as well as a professional level. To Faye, our deepest sympathies to a very dear and lovely woman who has a special place in our hearts.

A true humanist, caring and generous. His contribution to education was immense, developing the art of teaching to a point seldom seen.
Wednesday lunches will never be the same without my best mate and confident.

Dear Faye - my deepest condolences on Neil's passing - and what a life. It was one of the great privileges to have meet and worked with Neil 2002 - 2012 in introducing learning preferences and VARK into the world of high performance sport. In collaboration with Graeme Robson, the book 'we' wrote (to be fair Neil did most of the writing - we added the sports bits!) had an impact in HP sport around the world. Neil was a wonderful person to work with - optimistic, energetic and creative and we spent a number of enjoyable times on the road around NZ sharing with NZ Coaches in the HP sports system. An educational and learning leader ahead of his time. Thank you Neil for what you shared.....
