Nigel was an inspiration and his hard work did not diminish the warmth and ideas he shared with his class mates through the 4 years at Wellington Technical College. It is over 20 years since we shared thoughts and still that gulf is sorely felt.

Dear Jan and family

Our deepest condolences on the passing away of Nigel. I was a commonwealth scholar under Nigel starting in 1985 doing my PhD. We have met you both a few times. Since we left NZ, I didn't get a chance to meet him in person and my last contact via email was in 2010.

Putting his engineering excellence/contribution aside, he was a great human being and a few I have ever come across.

We pray that he rests in peace and we will remember him for ever.

Dear Jan
Penny and I have only just learned that Nigel passed away before Christmas. Nigel will be sorely missed as a friend and colleague. His stature in earthquake engineering was huge internationally, and building design methods benefitted greatly from his research and design thinking. At the personal level I will remember Nigel as a great friend with whom we spent many pleasurable hours over the years, and shared the attachment to Alfa Romeos. Our warmest sympathies to you and the family at this sad time.

Kindest regards
John Raine

Nigel - you are an inspiration to me and many of my generation. I will strive to emulate your humble and kind demeanour to all, and clarity and simplicity in earthquake engineering. I am glad I was able to share with you during the last NZSEE Conference that I am now applying DDBD to my designs at Beca. Your departure is indeed a great loss to New Zealand and the earthquake engineering fraternity. Rest in peace, Nigel. Condolences to the family.

Thank you for everything and farewell my friend

Though nothing can bring back the hour
of splendor in the grass, of glory in the flower;

We will grieve not, rather find
strength in what remains behind.
