Michael GOUSMETT Obituary
Passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, at Nurse Maude Hospice, on Sunday, May 18, 2025, aged 73 years. Beloved husband of Mary Gousmett (Fraser). Dearly loved Dad, father-in-law and stepdad of Bryce, Sharyn and Adrian, Julia and Michiel; Sarah, Damian and Sarah, Sam and Kath. Much loved Granddad of Delilah and Lorelei; Flynn and Beth; Maddie and Eadie; Jak; Amelia; Sam, Isabelle, Blake and Ben. Michael will be sadly missed by his extended family, many friends and colleagues. Many thanks to the Palliative Care team and the staff at Nurse Maude Hospice for all their loving care of Michael. In accordance with Michael's wishes, his body has been bequeathed to the Otago Medical School. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Nurse Maude Hospice Christchurch would be appreciated and may be made online via their website. A memorial service will be held at the John Rhind Chapel, entry from London and Whitmore Streets, on Friday, May 30, at 10.00am. My deepest sympathy to Michael's family.
I remember him as my client for some years before I left practice as a lawyer. He was interesting and interested. Sadly, he was the biblical prophet, insufficiently recognised or materially rewarded in his own country. His ideas live on and will be incorporated in legislation in due course, I am sure. As he once said to me: "there are only two certainties, death and taxes".

Colin and I remember fun times in the early 70s with Michael. Saturday night dinners and parties. Trips away together. We have not seen each other apart from at a distance in the street but we remember him with fondness.
