We only met Merv a couple of times and always struck us as a great gentleman with a real passion for music, especially folk. I will never forget his recital of "Now,I'm easy" by Eric Bogle one night after dinner. So moving.
Our thoughts go out to his family that he always talked so proudly of.RIP Merv, now you are easy.

On behalf of the Christchurch Folk Music Club, I would like to extend our condolences to the extended family of Merv.
Merv was a faithful member of our club, his regular attendance at both club nights and festivals ensured continuity as well as stability. He always had a bright and cheery word to say, his enjoyment of both listening to and creating music was ever evident and his love of people a treasure to behold.
His presence at Folk Club will be truly missed, there are many memories of Merv for us to recall he was a true character and certainly made his mark on the club over his long and dedicated association with the club.
Kindest regards
Secretary

Merv was one of the first NZ folkies I joined for a tune, and that was at the first Whitestone folk festival in the early nineties. He loved to play music, to dance, to sing, and most of all to recount what was going on, especially with his family. He was so very encouraging of and interested in people performing, and connected with all the people he met at festivals (which I think was probably everyone there). His lovely family will have to adjust to the idea and reality of life without this great heart, this unconditional love by Merv, and he will also be sorely missed by his folk family. But the care is already with us, and permanent. Haere ra, old friend.

So sorry to hear of Merv's death. He was always supportive of me, interested in people and their music, and such a stalwart of the Canterbury folk music scene. So glad for our chats over the past year.

I was so saddened to hear Mervyn had passed away. I enjoyed many hours chatting to Merv about everything from music, politics, history etc etc after I completed his weekly housework for a cleaning company over the past couple of years.Thank goodness he was always the last call of the day as we chatted so much it was hard to leave. He was always kind, interesting and very witty and spoke of his family with great pride,at every opportunity. It's been a pleasure to have known you Merv.
