Maureen MCBRIDE Obituary

I first met Maureen while living in Auckland and pregnant with my son, who eventually became her god child. She took me to the hospital to have him and bought me home a few days later, along with a big bunch of flowers, I have never forgotten her gently kindness.

My sister and myself had the privelelege of being with Maureen in Rome at the time of Mary MacKillops cannonisation. Maureen made sure we were welcomed within the RNDM community on the via Bravetta, and arranged accomodation for us with the Indian sisters nearby. It was obvious to us that Maureen embued the charism of Euphraise Barbier. Strong and good character, look after those around you and lead everyone into a bright and welcoming future. So sad. Maureen McBride as a senior St Joseph's primary school pupil probably saved my life in the Maitai River on our annual picnic.I had got in too deep, had inhaled some water and there was no one else who saw me.She hauled me out and had a quiet, kind manner.No teacher approached, so in her humble gentle way it all went under the radar.My deepest sympathy to her family especially Peter whom I knew from St Mary's Parish.Also to all her RNDM sisters in NZ and abroad.

Maureen and I studied languages together in 1970-72, in Form 6 and 7 and then in our first year at Canterbury University. We were close friends sharing a lot of great conversations and laughter. Maureen was inspiring with her rock solid values and genuine caring for others, despite their differences. Our lives have taken us in different directions, but I have always held her in deep affection and admiration.

My association with Maureen goes back to 1964 when we attended St Joseph's, Nelson, New Zealand. On Saturdays Maureen and I helped our teacher, Sr Patricius to clean the convent chapel the reward was great a large glass of lime green cordial and a convent cake. Then sister would make us kneel down and pray for a special intention although she never revealed what it was.

Many years later when Maureen was staying with me in Dunedin before I entered the Little Sisters of the Poor I asked her if she ever found out what the special intention was? Maureen just laughed herself silly a real giggler -and finally blurted out: Yes, she was getting us to pray that God would give each of us a religious vocation! And we never knew we that were praying for ourselves! What gratitude we both owed that wise Sr Patricius.

Thanking our God for the gift Maureen has been and always will be for each of us. We have been privileged to have shared in her life.

My prayers to Maureen's family and to her RNDM family. I have always appreciated Maureen and her life witness of the Gospel. Last year she accompanied Sr Kim Phung Pham to Dunedin to be with me to make the Exercises of St Ignatius. My prayers for you all.
