Mary BAKER Obituary

BAKER,
Mary Madeline (nee Gason):
Passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 13, 2022, at Cashmere View Rest Home, aged 91 years. The most cherished wife of the late Brian John Baker, an incredibly loving, supportive role model Mother and mother-in-law of Maureen and John, Alison and Paul (Kangaroo Valley Australia), Roseanne and Doug, Kathy and William, Erin and Scott, Philippa and Shaun, Graeme (Northland), Scott and Spring (Australia). Adored grandmother of twenty three and great-grandmother to eleven. Special Ma to Dawn and Corina. Her much loved sister, Beverly Burgess, is the only remaining member of the Gason immediate family and will miss her 'Twisted Sister' Line Dancing partner enormously. Mary had a wealth of friendships and cared for most everyone she met. When her family were younger, she was actively involved in Wharenui Swim Club and all their sporting and dancing endeavours and then when they became more independent, she spent the mid 70's to early 90's heavily involved in social justice issues and will be remembered by many as the first person to actively demonstrate against the Springbok Rugby team (literally) when she found herself on the same plane as the team on their 1981 flight to NZ. She spent her last two years being cared for by the most amazing group of nurses and caregivers at Cashmere View Rest Home and we can never thank them enough for the genuine love and care they showed her daily. A private service was held at Harewood Crematorium on Thursday, March 17. Should you wish to view Mary's service then please contact one of the 'sisters' and a link will be provided. Messages of condolence can be sent to 81 Fendalton Road, Christchurch 8014.

Dearly loved Mum of Roseanne and Graeme, mother-in-law of Doug and treasured nana of Erana, Kiri, Nicholas, Mariana, Genae, Lani and their partners; Carl and Jess and Nana Mary to Maisy and Jackson. Words do not adequately describe this amazing woman who guided us and most importantly taught us through her actions to stand up for what you believe in.
