Condolences and pleasant memories re. Martin Talbot.
Although Martin and Hillary were a few years younger than us, my sister Sally and I would often see them and chat while on our way to the MDHS as we walked up from Dolma Street and along the School Lane. They were wholesome schoolmates, collegial and not prone to any unpleasant behaviors. As I recall, their Dad "Bill" was the invaluable and whitty town lawyer, and their mother Mary a medical doctor. Mr. Talbot provided me with some very sound advice as I was making a major career choice.
If my memory from circa. 75 years ago is still robust, I recall the Talbot family and others being concerned about the well- being of the area around the school and the nice 2-storey houses there (I recall 3: the Talbots, Mrs Cambell(?), and the Ayres). There was a proposal to remove the beautiful and decorative trees along school lane to lay down more payment and provide more parking. My recall is that Hillary Talbot showed her level of dedication to the beauty of the neighborhood by climbing up a tree so that the bulldozer could not knock the trees down. Apparently the preservation/parking debate (generally Kiwi polite but with firm opinions on both sides) went on and in my later visits to Methven I was somewhat sad to see the trees had gone.
