Dear Bernie and Family. Sending love and condolences to you all at this very sad time. I enjoyed meeting up with Mark again when I was in Picton in 2022 and I loved seeing all the art work in the gallery. Mark was a great host, full of life, and ever so knowledgeable. May he rest in peace now.

Bernie and family,
In late 1987 I am came to St Josephs, Picton to visit the school that I had been appointed to. It was lunchtime and you were doing "duty" but took me to the staffroom to meet Mark who was engrossed in the Real Estate notices in the newspaper! I'm certain he had the afternoons lessons well planned! During our conversation Mark asked me where I was staying. When I named a motel he said "Please, do us the honour of staying with us.". Wow! My first night in Picton was with you and your children in Rutland St. I will never forget it. ( I remember reading a bedtime story to one or more of your children). I am so sorry to hear of Mark's passing. Sorry that I cannot be their Wednesday but you all will be in my thoughts.
Love to you all, Mike Burton

So sorry to learn of Mark´s passing. He was such a multifaceted man. Clearly he was a very astute businessman and leader. He had a commanding presence but could be a big friendly giant also.
A pleasure to do business with and highly respected.
Our sincere condolences to his lovely wife Bernie and their family.

Dearest Pip, George, Bernie and whanau. So much aroha sent to you all, while thinking of your Dad, Grandad and Husband. The Waitohi Playcentre crew, knew him as a quietly spoken man, who was effortlessly a 'cool grandad'. We will always appreciate that time we were able to host a fundraiser in his gorgeous gallery. Ka aroha hoki, Gems.

Pip, I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your lovely dad. He was such a genuine man and always took the time to ask me how I was when we bumped into each other. I loved hearing him fizz about art too, and I will always think of him when I walk past a Hammond. Thinking of you, Bernie and your brothers at this difficult time. Love Sally and family xx

Mark , was a good Patron and supporter of the Marlborough Art Society. I worked along with him when we were establishing the current Gallery in High Street. He was forthcoming in imparting his marketing skills to the fundraising team. He was always generous in his support of MAS. In establising his own alery in Picton he added a further dimesion to the visual arts in Marlborough, a facility which has become world renowned. I will miss him and the encouragement he gave to me when I held office at MAS. Walter Scott. Patron, Marlborough Art Society

While we only had the pleasure in being hosted once by Mark on a guided tour of his extraordinary art gallery in the heart of Picton, the occasion has left a strong impact on Geoff Hargreaves and myself.
His gentleness while in full control, his modern and historical knowledge was a delight to listen to and respond to. An extraordinary painting collection.
A true art aficionado and subliminal teacher. Had Brigid Forrest not organised the showing we would have left Picton at some loss. Susan Webb, Wellington

Our thoughts are with the whole family at this time. Mark was so open on his final terminal prognosis when we last chatted. We will miss his passionate background art stories at the "Te Papa of the South" Stevenson Collection in Picton. It has been such a great sharing space but will be missing some of the colour. RIP Mark.
