Mark (Swamps) was a real character, a great storyteller and a pleasure to have known. He loved the remoteness of New Zealand´s isolated weather stations and told me, not so long ago, that not a day went by without him thinking about the years he spent living on the islands; Campbell Island in particular.
The attached photo was taken by Mark, during his visit to Campbell Island over the summer of 2010-2011, as part of the Campbell Island Bicentennial Expedition. It´s a photograph of Tucker Cove, one of his favourite places on the island, and probably the planet.

Lovely and special memories of a childhood friend. The tree huts, clod fights , and the long bike rides from Riccarton to Harewood with golf bags slung on our backs. Mark was such an enthusiast. Kindest thoughts and love to Rowena.

Mark was a cherished friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His love of science and the environment will live on. The photo captures the view from one of Mark's favourite local hikes, overlooking Lake Kaniere, Hokitika, and the Tasman Sea from Mt Brown - one of the remote and tranquil places he held so dear.

So sad to hear. A Subantarctic legend. At Campbell Island tomorrow- will have a wee dram in his honor at Beeman Base and feature him in my lecture tonight. Lou Sansonn
