Margaret TURNER Obituary

(formerly of Drummond and Queenstown)

27.10.1928 - 22.3.2025

She believed she was the luckiest person alive right up until her wearying body of 96 years finally overtook her spirit at 10.00pm last Saturday. Yet she had lost the love of her life Lin nearly 17 years earlier and, until her recent move to Auckland, was living at some distance from her three loving sons and their wives - John and Diana (Culverden), Guy and Claire (Havelock North), Michael and Sussan (Auckland) - and their families. She cherished every opportunity to see her nine grandchildren and, at last count, 10
great-grandchildren. But Margaret was never lonely because she always drew people towards her with her kindness, generosity and patience. None more so than Bee Neo Chew, the exchange student who became the daughter she never had. Bee Neo's love for "Margie Mum" has been passed on to her own family in New York and beyond. Margaret lived independently in Queenstown until July last year when she accepted the need to move into care closer to family at St Andrew's Village in Glendowie. The family is deeply grateful for the care and comfort provided by the remarkable staff there. A farewell will be held for Margaret at All Souls Chapel, Purewa, Auckland at 1.00pm on April 16.

My family moved to Drummond from the UK in the early 60´s for my Dad to work with Turner Brothers Builders. The support we received from the Turner family and in particular, the friendship that developed between Margaret and my mother was hugely impactful on us settling in Drummond - Mum said she would never have coped without Margaret and the wonderful, kind, caring and generous person that she was. On behalf on my family, please accept our most sincere condolences on the passing of a true lady.

I remember some great holidays spent at Aunty Margaret and Uncle Lin's house in Drummond, building the tree-house, playing billiards and riding a horse (very badly!!) in the back paddock. My condolences to John, Guy, Michael and families.

While not unexpected the reality of Margaret´s passing hits painfully. She claimed to be blessed and happy in life and she was but equally Margaret shared love, joy, blessing and warm welcome to all she met. It was a joy to listen as she made music fly from the piano and an honour to have shared 12 years with her as her Minister.

I pray her love for life and people and her God will continue to inspire her family and friends.

I have very fond memories of (Miss Fisher) as we walked to school, she taught me about the Deciduous Trees in Memorial Avenue Drummond. I was five, and then later as Margaret Turner we all enjoyed her company as we grew older, My sympathy to all of her family. Sincerely Ellen Ballantyne née Booth.
