Margaret O'CONNOR Obituary

Peacefully on January 11, 2024, aged 91. Margaret was the much loved wife of 60 years to the late Kevin Francis O'Connor, mother to Naomi, Rachel, Miriam, Frank, Martin and Elizabeth (deceased 2014), and grandma to Orestes, Freddy, Luke, Peter/Spike, Morgane, Elena and Laertes. An appreciated auntie and great-aunt to many Grahams, Langs and Lamonts around the world. Margaret was a resolute contributor in communities, from her beginnings in Ohio and Syracuse, New York, with her father George, mother Margie, sisters Norma and Carol; in her mathematics career; her teaching; and the family life she built in Sumner and the global connections she kept through faith and women's organisations. Thanks to the carers in Merivale Retirement Village, and to companions at the Mary Potter Apartments in recent years. There will be a Rosary for Margaret at 5.00pm, Friday, January 19, and a funeral mass on Saturday, January 20 at 10.00am, at Our Lady Star of the Sea, 7 Dryden Street, Sumner. Mass will be followed by refreshments, with the burial following at Ruru Lawn Cemetery. Messages to [email protected]. In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations to the Little Company of Mary, ANZ Bank, 01 0537 0056135 00.

John 3:3

Death comes
as we know
it must
One day
becomes
singular
In
singularity
infinity

Once
born we
still
To a
single
point

Without dimension
eternity

Margaret and I shared some things in common. She was born in Ohio, I was born in Iowa. We both came to NZ by ship, as it was cheaper than flying. We married Kiwi's. There were four O'Connor girls and two boys. We had four sons and two daughters. We both lost daughters -
her Elizabeth and our eldest, Janet. We both lost our husbands. Margaret and I, at one stage, belonged to a Tai Chi class. We were often at the
same retreats and meditation gatherings. When she moved to Mary Potter, we were on the same
5:30 zoom meditation gathering. We both seemed to be getting comfortable with our God in silence. Rest in peace, Margaret.
Condolences to your family.
