Leonard SUTTON Obituary

Of Rakaia (formerly Avonside). On October 12, 2025, peacefully at Ashburton Hospital, aged 88 years. Len was a loved father of Suzanne Sutton-Cummings, Philip, Warwick, and Graeme Sutton. Len was a treasured husband and best friend of Colleen. He was an appreciated and well liked step-father 'Len' of Philippa (Pip), Bronwyn, Cameron, Fleur, Euan, and Duncan, and their partners. A precious Poppie, Grandad and great-Grandad to his blended family. Heartfelt thanks to Dr Sue Fowlie and her staff at the Rakaia Medical Centre, to the Rakaia Fire Brigade volunteers, the St John Ambulance and Ashburton Hospital. Thanks also to the District nurses and Healthcare support and the Oncology Dept., Christchurch Hospital. The family are enormously grateful for all the support and empathy shown. Len fought a good fight. He has put down his tools for the last time and the shed is silent. A private funeral will be held.

To many know as len, but to me was poppy, he was the most caring funny person i have had the privilege of knowing and loving. We did some really fun things when i was living or staying with poppy and nana these things will live in my heart for ever and have set me up to bring my kids up to have those memories as well the ones that stand out to me most are our walks down to the river with peak and the times when he let me be a kid and get wet and play in the water. Some of the other things that stand out are taking me to ride the horses going up to Victoria park for mr whippy( this is why my oldest childs name is Victoria). He was never grumpy never telling me off always there. Even when i fell in the eel ponds at willow banks on my 5 th birthday he was not mad he always found the funny side of things even when i beat him at monopoly. I will always rememeber the time he had for me taking me to important things like st johns every monday letting me help with building the sleepout and he was always there to teach me things that i will use in life thanks to him even how to grow veggies and when to plant them. Poppie you are now in a better place you will be missed but never ever forgotten thank you for the things you did and for always watching over me i will love you forever and miss you more.

My deepest condolences to the Sutton family.

Though I did not know Len personally, it´s clear he was a man deeply respected and dearly loved - a quiet strength whose kindness will live on through the lives he touched.

I have been a close friend of Colleen´s family and know how deeply loved and cherished he was. Thinking of you all at this sad time and sending strength, comfort, and peace in the days ahead.
