Joseph Viola Obituary

Viola, Joseph
COHOES - Joseph J. Viola, 78, passed away peacefully, on July 20, 2025, to the timeless melodies of Frank Sinatra. Born on March 21, 1947, in New York City, Joseph was the beloved son of the late Emanuel and Alice (Massary) Viola.
A proud native of the city that never sleeps, Joseph grew up in New York City, and following his high school graduation, answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Navy. His time in the service instilled in him a lifelong sense of discipline, honor, and pride that he carried throughout his life.
Joseph's professional journey was as dynamic and engaging as he was. He brought his passion for people and style to life through the ownership of two beloved businesses, Elmundo's Bar, a neighborhood staple filled with laughter and stories, and Marcus East, a clothing store where his eye for fashion and charm met. Later in life, he applied his talents in the corporate world, working in computer security for MetLife until his retirement.
Whether he was behind the bar, helping someone find the perfect outfit, or safeguarding sensitive information, Joseph was always magnetic. With a glass of Johnnie Walker in hand and music from Sinatra or Dean Martin playing in the background, he made every room warmer, every conversation brighter, and every moment feel special. His engaging personality, genuine hospitality, and unwavering kindness left an impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him. Truly, no one had a bad word to say about Joseph. He was a man full of life, love, and laughter.
Joseph is survived by his devoted wife of nearly 53 years, Donna (Pizzitola) Viola, who was his partner in all things and the love of his life. He was a proud and loving father to his daughter, Danielle (Paul) Torrisi of Loudonville; and an adoring "Grandpa Shark," to Anthony and Alyssa. He also leaves behind his cherished goddaughter, Michele Massary, along with many dear friends, whose lives he enriched.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects on Thursday, July 24, 2025, from 4 to 7 p.m., at Bowen and Parker Bros. Funeral Home ,in Latham. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, July 25, 2025, at 9 a.m., at St. Ambrose Church in Latham. Interment with military honors will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, in Hawthorne, N.Y.
In honor of Joseph's generous heart and love for others, those who wish to make a lasting tribute may consider a donation to the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society, or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
As Frank once sang, "I did it my way." Joseph certainly did, and the world was better for it.

Joe was a wonderful friend, we will never forget his smile and laugh. He was patient and kind and his heart was as big as the sky. We will always remember his kindness and love for our dad, Peter. They were good buddies and I'm sure they are in heaven drinking coffee and eating donuts and just enjoying each others company again. Joe will forever be in our hearts, prayers, thoughts. The world lost a beautiful human being and heaven gained a beautiful soul. Rest in peace our dear friend. Love Always.
