Vale Uncle Joe. A good man who I have known all my life. My memories of the picnics we went on, the Beaumont's and Puenteners to Ashley Gorge when we were all kids in those halcyon days of the early 1970s. The fireworks nights every November. Joe's shed filled with projects and inventions he was working on. Evan, Marlies and Janine, take comfort that your Dad lived a long, full life filled with family and friends. It has been an honour to have known such a kind gentleman who loved a chat, had a wicked sense of humour and never lost his Swiss accent, after all the years in NZ.! My deepest sympathy and thoughts are with you and your families at this time. I will miss him. Stay strong.

I was surprised to read of the passing of my friendly neighbourhood mate. I got to know Joe after he moved into his home in Silvester Street and spent several times in his company chatting and laughing. Joe was always very friendly and cordial he had a great sense of humour and a broad mind. You will be missed Joe.

Joe, Despite having lived so far away across the sea, for the last 15 years, we will still miss you. I always looked forward to receiving your wonderfully newsy letters (in a real mail box!) that were packed with newspaper clippings, photos and jokes, as well as lots of news. I still smile at the last one you sent me for my birthday, a few weeks back, (complete with Smarties that you had individually taped to the inside of the letter!) I will ever be grateful for 2 trips "Down Under" over the last 4 years, where I once again enjoyed your company, your home baking and your hugs. Wonderful memories of a beloved Uncle.
To Evan, Marlies and Janine and your families, may you find comfort in the knowledge that your dad/ granddad was greatly loved and will be missed by so many. His legacy of humour will be remembered by all who knew him. His many letters reflected how proud he was of you and your families. You are all greatly in our thoughts, as we send love and prayers to you all.
