Heavy

November 23, 2024

The members of the Heavy Vehicle Engineers (HVE) Group offer their condolences to John's family, close friends and former colleagues.

John provided mechanical, structural and heavy vehicle design and certification services to many businesses and members of the public in the Canterbury, West Coast and wider South Island regions.

He worked as a professional engineer for consulting firms and then set up his own practice based in Christchurch. John was a member of IPENZ (now called Engineering NZ) and was a Registered Engineer.

He was involved with the establishment of Road Transport Certifying Engineers (RTCE, now called HVE) - a technical interest group of IPENZ. He contributed as the first secretary and also as an active group member.

John was a valued colleague and also a mentor to engineers starting out in transport and mechanical engineering. He was willing to take time to assist others and had a practical approach to design.

He was a dedicated Rotary member and was greatly valued by both family and community. Over the years he maintained an interest in engineering, his old green Ford V8 car, and enjoyed golf and overseas travel.

Marion,
We were so sorry and saddened to hear of the passing of John. As a next door neighbour, John was always kind, helpful, caring and leader in our street - holding the annual street gathering for a number of years.
Kind regards

Marion and family - we were very sorry to hear of John's death. He was a kind and helpful mentor in my early engineering career, and with a passionate respect for community and ethics. He was held in high regard by his peers and, I'm sure by a wide range of his acquaintances.
Best regards to you all, Ian and Robyn Goss.

Marion - very sorry to hear of John´s passing. I have many good memories of him mentoring a young engineer and being most patient. He was a good man and a very experienced engineer. Kindest regards Bernard Whitham
