So sorry to hear of John's passing, in fact shocked, as in other tributes he was a no nonsense engineer who always had a practical solution and also respected a builders view on a way of doing things even if he sometimes said, Matthew that will be stretching the boundaries but we will see what I can do, always one to trust your work if he new you weren't hiding anything, a great man to deal with and have done a few projects over the last 20 years or so with John and he was my go to for structural engineering.
My sincere sympathy to all the family in the passing of a respected person.
Matthew and Rose Fairmaid, Kowhitirangi, Hokitika.

John, Thank you for the practical engineering solutions you were able to provide to us over the years. Unfortunately this "Old School" practicality doesn't seem to be readily available these days - you will be sadly (and fondly) missed!

John
Thank you for your expertise and practical engineering advice over many years.
In particular your risk based mitigation that positioned the electricity network to perform so well during the earthquakes.
Your input to Canterbury Engineering Lifelines over many years was also highly valued.
Rest in peace my friend.
