Dear Marian,

We are so deeply sorry for your loss and so sad we did not know of the time of John's passing and missed the Service of Thanksgiving.

John was a great support, faithful friend, and an example of a fine Christian man, who encouraged us throughout life's journey. I (Margie) knew him from the early 1970s, when I joined the Fortess, Dunedin Salvation Army. He prayed, visited and urged us in the Gospel, when our lives were in great difficulty and his prayers were not in vain.

Throughout the years he has been steadfast and one we admired greatly. Though we saw him only occasionally he never ceased to be a great Christian friend and someone we loved in the Lord . He always had something good to say and gave strength to press on. My last chance meeting him in Christchurch Hospital, about two years ago, and the encouragement he gave will be treasured forever.

You will miss him and grieve for such a wonderful man, as we will all miss him. But we look forward to meeting again at the coming of our Lord. Be strong, lean on Jesus, trust in Him and cherish your memories.

Deepest sympathy,
Marguerite and Ian McCartney

I regret I am unable to attend the celebration of John's life. We were at primary school and high school in Oamaru mostly in the same classes. As third former's we started the crusader group at Waitaki Boys. In my secondary school years we were close friends and i owe deep gratitude to john for his influence on my teenage life as a christian. In the last months of John's life we had a number of long phone conversations at his instigation. An evangelical Christian and a liberal christian thinker speaking similar language and appreciative of each others christian journey. Go well John my friend Go well Go with God.Thanks for the influences on my life. Jim Veitch Masterton
