John was a giant in the development of orienteering in NZ, always keen to share his skills. He was also an amazing, cheerful, positive, idiosyncratic, generous personality whom it was a privilege to know.

Dear John, I am saddedned by your premature departure.I was proud to call you Uncle John. Althoughh we did not always see a lot of each other, when we did, it was always a joy to catch up and hear about what you and Robyn, Jan and Michael had been up to usually with lots of laughter.
I remember with fondness in my childhood days the times our two families would get together either at mum and dads or for a slide evening at Grandad Davies, plus the times you and Robyn had me to stay at Methven and the farm at Putaruru.
These were special times for me and my one regret is that I did not get around to telling you before you passed onto that great Pine forest in the sky.
Thankyou Uncle John and Aunty Robyn for making a difference to my life
Love Paul, Anita, Sean and Hamish
