GRIFFITHS, Kenneth Robert
September 16, 1931 - May 14, 2021 It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our Dad, Kenneth Robert Griffiths, on May 14, 2021, in North Vancouver, British Columbia. Ken is predeceased by his wife, Rose, and survived by his children: Susan (Alan), Karen (Jeff), Sandra (Dom), Janet, Craig (Jacquie), Todd (Jennifer), 9 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren.
Ken was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia where he played football and his father taught him boxing. After graduating high school, he left Halifax to join the Royal Canadian Air Force as an Officer in Navigation. While still in the Air Force, he trained for his Commercial Pilot's License. In the beginning of his career, he flew the Dew line to the Arctic, sometimes delivering kittens to the residents, which would sit on his lap in the cockpit. Later, he would fly for Nordair Airlines out of Montreal, once landing a crippled Boeing 737 jetliner at Dorval airport, ensuring the safety of 95 passengers and 6 crew. Throughout his career, Ken was a member of CALPA (Canadian Airline Pilots Association), including being active on key negotiation teams. He would retire as a Captain on the DC10 with Canadian Airlines in Vancouver, his last flight would be September 28, 1991, Flight 10 Nagoya to Vancouver.
Ken would retire to Ladner, B.C., where he enjoyed walks, playing cards with Rose, taking road trips down the coast, and taking care of his cat. He would spend the last seven years in North Vancouver where you could not walk down Lonsdale Avenue without someone saying, "Hi Ken."
The family would like to thank Cedarview Lodge (Pine Forest) for caring for Ken in the last months of his life. You are a wonderful, kind, and loving staff.
