I met Jim 56 years ago in January 1967. The first word he ever said to me was, "Pub"? Since then, the friendship widened and deepened; so many laughs; so many shared experiences with our respective families; so many memories; so much outrageous nonsense.
Our sense of humour seemed to be almost identical and we only had to look at each other to know what the other was thinking and was about to say. Our wives and families were initially bemused and eventually highly amused by our antics. They told us that we were more like brothers than just friends.
Five days before Jim died, I told him that, at the end of our lives, we all went out through the same door; and, while he might be going through the door before the rest of us, I would see him again soon. And, when I arrived on the other side of that door, I´d expect to see a pint of beer waiting for me, just like it had been all those 56 years ago. We left Wanaka the following day and, on our final parting, he said, "I´ll have that pint waiting for you".
Au revoir, man. Until we meet again, you will be sorely missed.
