Dr Laracy was my master's thesis supervisor in 1973/1974. He introduced me to academic writing and taught me how to make meaning out of official documents. More than that, he mentored me in making meaning out of life in our frequent conversations on life and faith.

Sincere condolences to the whole family. I will always remember the endless debates between Hugh and my father Michael which seemed to last for years, and Hughs sharp wit that always gave my father a run for his money. Although the last time I met him was as a teenager in 1986 his reputation was always part of the household in Wellington
Rest in Peace

I was sad to hear of you (him) passing - a teacher, a supervisor and friend! Thinking of my time at Auckland University is remembering Hugh! His support, his kindness, his books and pieces of paper - but also his sharp mind and the challages I had to face as a German and a protestant. I later noticed that it wwere these challanges he put before me, helped me to grow.
And for this I will always remember him!!!

Professor Hugh was a mentor and a good friend. He ignited my passion for history, especially the history of Samoa. Because of his influence, I completed a Masters degree looking at the history of the Samoan chiefly system. He was also one of my supervisors for my PhD looking at Polynesian Traditional Chiefs. I am very honoured to have met and been taught by you Hugh. Rest In Peace. Falaniko Tominiko
