Hugh HASSAN Obituary

Passed away peacefully at the Kahurangi Dementia Unit, Greymouth, on September 24, 2025, aged 81. Dearly loved husband of Frances, a lifelong sweetheart and best friend and a loved companion of our dog Kora. Cherished father and father-in-law of Michelle and Anthony, and Wayne and Tania. Adored and devoted Grandad of Shanon and Grace, Chevenne, Tyler and Kyra, each of whom held a special place in his heart. Much loved Great-Grandad of Ryder, Billie, and Ella who brought him joy and smiles. Hugh was a hardworking man all his life. A man of grit, loyalty and determination who gave all to his family, friends and community. He touched many lives through his work and the bond of friendships he built over decades. Hugh was proud of his roots and proud of the family he raised. His passing has left a deep gap, and although he will be dearly missed, we find comfort in knowing he is now at peace and free from pain. The family extends heartfelt thanks to the kind and gentle staff at the Kahurangi Dementia Unit who made Hugh's last months bearable. Their compassion and care will never be forgotten. Messages to 15 Wicken Place, Reefton 7830. A private family committal service will be held to celebrate Hugh's life. An afternoon of remembrance where stories, laughter and memories can be shared in his honour, will be held at one of his favourite places, the Reefton Workingmen's Club on Thursday, October 2, 2025, at 1.30pm.

Rest peacefully Hugh. Your work is done and your pain is gone.
Your memory will live in our hearts.

Our condolences on behalf of my parents - Ken and Betty Lowden. My Aunty Jean (Raven), Mother Betty and Uncle Carl (Todd) were cousins to Hugh, Brian and Gary. We have fond memories as children visiting Uncle Hughie and Aunty Betty in Reefton many years ago with Aunty Jean and Uncle Cliff. We saw Brian at their funeral in 2017. Although it has been along time, I do remember your names. Thinking of you all.
