David Verrall Rural Nurse Specialist, Haast 2000-2005

About 20 yrs ago, Barney Mowat walked into the Haast Clinic in his ropey hunting gear late one afternoon. "We've been hunting", he said, and following on behind him was his equally garbed mate. "This is Bodle", he gestured,"put the kettle on, boy!" And I spent the next hour with these two awesome medical men over copious cups of tea and a packet of digestive biscuits listening to their stories...and tolerating the great unwashed! And some of their stories were true, I'm sure, but barely repeatable to most!
Both were great medical men who saved so many on the Coast over many years, and we won't see their likes again. Tight lines to both.

Mr Bodle was a wonderful surgeon and over the years he has done wonderful work on many West Coast people. Working with the Ambulance service here in South Westland over many years he was always a great support to us all. REST IN PEACE

I remember with fondest the friendship and regaling of tales between Dr Barney Mowat and Dr Bodle when he came down to South Westland to run his surgical clinic at Whataroa...it always seemed one of the highlights of the month for Barney; a chance to catchup with a medical colleague face to face, and to talk about their shared passion for fishing and the outdoors. Two wonderful characters with such heart for their community. Rest in peace.

My deepest sympathy to the family, Hugh was one of the most gifted and compassionate surgeon's I've ever worked with, he did some amazing surgery and we saved many lives, he worked (and us),all hours of the day and night in theatre and as mentioned would also pop in at odd hours of the day and night to check on his patients, we were so lucky to have a man of his calibre on the coast and he left a great legacy , he had a special place in our hearts and we had the highest regard for him. My deepest sympathy goes to his family, thank you for sharing him with the nursing staff and his patients especially, please tell your children how much he was thought of by us all ,you have lost a good man...

It was a an amazing experience working with Hugh. Always amazing when he would `pop´ into the ward to check on a patient in the middle of the night. Always willing to share his experience and expertise with others. Condolences to the family.

To the Bodle family, my condolences to you all, Hugh was a most respected man and a wonderful Doctor, I write this note as it would be amiss of me to not recognise what he did for my late father inlaw, Cliff Harris from Kowhitirangi who Hugh patched up many times after several accidents on the farm, he may have mentioned him to some of you, he definitely used up his 9 lives and always spoke highly of the fact that Hugh managed to get him back together, sorry for your loss and a man that was respected amongst our family.
Go easy, Matt Fairmaid.
