Graham DUNCAN Obituary

The family are sad to announce his passing on May 28, 2025, at Nurse Maude Care Hospital, Christchurch. He was a genuine caring man who was never happier than when sitting amongst his family when there were times to celebrate. He will be missed by his wife Monica and children Michael, Christine, Claire, Alasdair, Helen, Elizabeth, and their families. Graham appreciated the care he received from the wonderful staff at Nurse Maude and also the love, support and care from the Motor Neuron Disease (MND) Support Group, MND CNS Raewyn, OT Kate and the many other Health Professionals. Graham requested that there be no funeral, but should anyone wish to acknowledge his passing, a donation to Nurse Maude via www.nursemaude.org.nz/donate would be greatly appreciated.

To Monica and family
We were so sad to hear of Graham's passing. We have fond memories of our time at Porirua. I remember the times that I worked with Graham and yourself and living with Graham on the top floor of the Police station. Other memories are your wedding and when Liz and I spent a night with you while we were on our honeymoon (1973 - Taihape I think. I was recovering from glandular fever). Graham was a great colleague to work with in Porirua and Christchurch. Please accept our condolences and love to you and your family. Mike and Liz Holmes

It was very sad news hearing the passing of Graham.
He was a true gentleman and took pride in his work. Graham´s work efforts were impeccable.
I found him to a being a very kind and caring man.
The example I have of his caring manner was the February earthquakes. I had been working in the garage and I left my keys on my desk on the third floor. I approached Graham, and he didn´t give it a thought, he escorted me upstairs and I grabbed my keys. I was always grateful for his kindness.

Graham, aka Poppa Smurf, was my first Police Sergeant on Beat Section in Christchurch. He was the consummate professional. Extremely proud of Monica, his family and career. I have incredibly fond memories of him and our CHB3 team.
My deepest sympathies Monica to you and your family. Big hugs x

After a health issue myself in 1998 and living and working in a country station, I needed to return to the city - Graham heard of my predicament and promptly offered me a position in his section - despite knowing nothing about me. I had the pleasure of working with him for 13 years and got to know him, both professionally and personally - I always found him to be a caring and good "boss" and a source of good advice.

It is 46 years since we met Monica and Graham (in St. Helen's Hospital Wellington where their Alasdair and our Peter were born 2 days apart.) Through many house moves etc. over the years, we have kept in contact and have remained good friends, visiting each other when we could. So it was with great sadness that we learnt of Graham's illness, and of his death on Wednesday. Graham was a lovely man, ----- kind and caring, and a genuinely good person. He adored Monica and loved and was proud of his children and grandchildren. He will be missed by so many.

So saddened to learn of Graham's passing. He was a real decent caring man, who would help anyone. It was my privilege to have known, and worked with him. Rest easy Sgt.
