Dear Ann,
It's been so sad to hear of Gid's death. A very favourite cousin, but then so are all the others! What a man, hedge-cutter, fisherman, holder of very firm views on many subjects, kind, entertaining, hospitable, loyal friend, the Laird of Taieri Mouth, above all a loving family man. There was no one quite like Gid, even his brothers and sister, and we'll all miss him greatly, part of our lives for decades, but grateful to have known him and all of you so long. I'm sorry I just can't manage to get to the funeral, but I'll watch the live-stream of course. I'm pleased we did get to visit you in your new house at Tamahere a few years ago and see Gid's glee as he demonstrated his new AI lawn mower, as Giddish a machine as you could imagine!
All our love to you, dear Ann and the rest of the family. We're all the better for having known him.

Dear Ann,
We were deeply saddened to hear today of Gid's passing. He was a dear and trusted friend and an inspirational colleague. We have precious memories of many times spent together at Brown Top, Taieri Mouth, at Tricketts Road and, of course, at Lincoln.
We send our deep condolences and our love to you and all members of your family.
