My deepest sympathy to the family of Dr George Mason .I have known George since the 1960s when he boarded with a Mrs Turner, our neighbor at Bell Block and i had my first encounter with ice axes ,crampons ,& ropes ,all being sorted on Mrs Turners and our driveway ,and the introduction to mountaineering hardware and its usage, not knowing as a young man I would myself follow in his footsteps as a mountaineer myself in later years ,where my friendship with George was sealed along with our interest in the mountain,as an Artist myself sharing his interest in paintings of it ,the flora and fauna of the bush ,and the places and routes climbed..A friend who just a few weeks prior to his passing was more than happy to assist me to endeavour to achieve a wish of mine .A Great man ,a Unique character, a Brilliant mind ,a real Gentleman ,a man of Faith and a Wonderful Friend to many .We will Cherish the memories he left ,and miss his Friendship. LIndsay Maindonald,Eltham.

Our condolences to George's family - what a privilege to have known such a man. Chris and I had a long association with George, a wonderful friend and mentor who enriched our lives. I vividly recall my first snow and ice climb of Mt Egmont/Taranaki in 1961with my brother Lloyd, under the watchful eye of George. In later years, Chris and I shared many memorable multi-day tramps with George, enjoying his enthusiasm, passion for NZ plants, and wide-ranging knowledge.
He has been aptly described as " the man with the answers looking for the question".
Thanks for the memories, George. R.I.P.

RIP George
A totara has fallen.
George was an active Rotarian with Rotary Club of NP West.
Through his generosity many youth and organisations benefitted.
One of his passions was Outward Bound and many people have attended the courses with his assistance.
It was only a few years ago he was assisting the club in wood splitting and stacking. Good ol' George.
George will live on in the hearts of many.
A true Rotarian with Service above Self.
RIP
