It is with great sadness that I have heard of Fred´s passing. The year was 1979 when a group of us from Te Kaihanga Maori hostel went to Merivale Papanui to try out for their under 21 side .All of us ended up playing senior rugby and Fred who was the manager took us under his wing .So George Poutu,Ken Smith,JJ Te Tai ,Ernie Goodhue and myself are better people for coming under his influence and guidance.
Thank you Fred

Dear Pat and Family. I am very saddened to hear of the news from our military brothers of Fred´s passing. I was privileged to serve with Fred in the NZ Army mainly in Dunedin, and after that to work with him on the Board of the Monticello Veteran´s Home & Hospital for about 16 years. Service abroad took me away from Dunedin and New Zealand, an aspect of life Fred knew only too well. Fred was one of life´s characters, ever the optimist, who had a enormous work ethic that is not often seen today. While we mourn Fred´s departure we celebrate his full life well lived, especially in the face of some adversity after his accident, and we thank him for his dedicated and enduring service to his family, his country and to veterans. There is a Swahili saying that goes - Anokufa awachaye wana afurahi, haifi hayati, tawi hufa uhai hukaa. The one who dies leaving children let that person rejoice! Life does not die; the branches die, life goes on. Thank you Fred for your advice often, and your friendship. My aroha to Pat and the family at this sad time. Kia Mate Toa.
