Elizabeth SAWYER Obituary

On October 15, 2025, Liz passed peacefully at Nurse Maude Hospital Care in Christchurch, surrounded by family, after a determined and courageous journey battling cancer, aged 60. Dearly loved wife of Adrian, devoted Mum to Anna, and Andrew, and sister to Edith, Elaine, and William. Liz spent 26 years dedicated to her various roles at the University of Canterbury where she was a mentor, role model, support, and friend to others through her strength, positive attitude, and resilience. She was also an inspiration and a dear friend to many. Special thanks to the Cancer Society, Breast Cancer New Zealand, and staff at St Georges Hospital, Christchurch Public Hospital, and Nurse Maude.

Liz will be sadly missed but as she always said, we will all continue to "remember to smile"

I have just read, via Diane, the very sad news about Liz. I worked with Liz at Arthur Andersen in Cambridge and London - we sadly lost touch over the years but what I remember most was her laugh, friendship, hearing about her family and the love she had for them and being my 'go to' person for anything to do with excel. Sending my condolences to all her family and friends.

I was a great friend of Liz at Arthur Andersen in London and we spent many happy times together and socialised a lot. She had a wonderful smile and was the warmest hearted person always. We kept in touch over the years and I loved hearing her family news. She was so happy with life with Adrian, Anna and Andrew . She was so proud of them and I bet she was the best mum. I am travelling to Christchurch next year and Liz was going to be my first port of call. I am deeply shocked and saddened by this news. Love and condolences to you all and may Liz rest in peace x

Dear Anna and Andrew,
I was one of Adrian´s students ten years ago. Your mother was such an angel. She showed us such kindness and support that I will never forget.
When our daughter Anna was born in Christchurch in 2014, Liz was like a mother to my wife and stood by us through difficult times. She tried in every possible way to fill the void of our family and make us feel at home.
She will forever remain in our hearts.
We share your sorrow from the bottom of our hearts.

With deepest sympathy,
Alireza and Bahar from Tehran, Iran.

Dear Adrian, Andrew and Anna - Liz (Mum) was always so warm and welcoming when I first turned up on the football sideline with Alex three years ago. I was so grateful to catch up with her at the junior prizegiving in September. I will always remember her positive and hopeful attitude despite everything. Thinking of you all at this time and wishing you strength and love in times ahead. Vicky and Alex Unwin.

We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Liz. She was a truly remarkable person-deeply admired for her strong work ethic, unwavering positivity, and the genuine warmth.

Liz loved Adrian, Anna and Andrew with all her heart; that was clear for all to see. She also cared for her community and that of her children's interest being a pillar of strength, resilience and kind encouragement. May you find comfort in the memories and legacy she leaves behind.

With deepest sympathy,
Phil, Melissa, Angus and Ben Green

I have lost a dear friend - someone I worked alongside for more than a decade. We weathered many storms together at work - moments that tested our patience and our sense of worth. Through it all, she carried herself with a grace and resilience that I will never forget. She kept showing up - with kindness and strength.

And beyond work, she faced her cancer diagnosis with amazing positivity and determination to be the miracle patient. It was inspiring. She never let the illness define her. She rose above it. She kept giving, kept showing up for others, even when the world didn´t always show up for her.

Now that she´s gone, I find myself holding onto the moments we shared, and also regretting the ones I didn´t ask about - like why her middle name was Fox?

I will remember her as someone who gave kindness, generosity and positivity to the world.

To Adrian, Anna, and Andrew - I hope you know how deeply she was respected by those who worked beside her. We saw her courage. We witnessed her resilience. Liz and I were each other´s sounding boards. I was lucky to share time with her, and I carry her memory with me.

May she rest in peace, and I will try to carry forward her strength and her refusal to be anything less than true to herself.

Liz was such a special friend and workmate. I´ll always treasure long morning tea chats over cups of tea and the obligatory cheese rolls!

She had such a warm, gentle way about her and could always make me laugh.

Liz was so proud of her children and everything they achieved and she spoke of Anna and Andrew with such love and pride. Family meant the world to her.

Our "Dinner Ladies" catch-ups won´t be the same without her. I feel so lucky to have shared so many lovely moments and memories and she´ll be missed deeply but remembered with love always.

My thoughts are with Adrian, Anna, Andrew, and her much-loved fur family, Lily, Coco and Milo.
