I was sad to hear of Dr Ted's passing. I worked with him and Forbes in the ICU in the "old days". He had very high standards of care and was a dedicated Doctor and a wonderful man. He cared deeply for the patients in our care and supported us as a team. He was an incredible teacher and was respected by all those who knew him. What an amazing life lived. I feel so lucky to have known him.
Dear Ted, your work is done. The memories of you will live on. Time to Rest In Peace.

Anne-Maree, Chris and Sarah, thank you for live streaming Ted's service. I am thinking of you all. It was very interesting hearing about Ted's amazing medical career, for me he was the most wonderful brother in law to Peter and myself and uncle to Richard & Michelle.
Peter used to come back from a fishing trip to Waimarama with a story to tell. Some fisherman would call them adventures. Keeping to time was not a feature of these days.
Going further north on the diving trips Ted organised were always memorable occasions for Peter.
Richard and Michelle always knew that Uncle Ted 'had their back'. He was always interested in what they were doing.
Ted was such a modest, gentle and kind person. He will be forever in my thoughts.

It is with heavy hearts we learn the death of Edward "Ted" Ward, 12th of October 2023. Ted was a man of extraordinary dedication, compassion, and commitment, and his loss leaves an irreplaceable void in the lives of those who were fortunate enough to know him.
Ted was an exceptional healthcare professional, having served as a brilliant Intensive Care Specialist at Hawkes Bay Hospital and Napier Hospital. His work in the medical field was not just a profession but a true vocation. He dedicated his life to the well-being of others, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to patient care. Ted's empathy, expertise, and tireless efforts have saved countless lives, and his legacy in the medical community will endure as a source of inspiration for generations to come.
Ted was also a beloved family man. He bought kindness, wisdom and comfort to all who knew him. Ted's role as a father, husband, and friend was marked by unwavering support, love, and an endless willingness to lend a help.
In addition to his work and family, Ted was an avid supporter of Ambulance Officers, recognizing their vital role in the emergency healthcare system. He actively championed their work, and his advocacy contributed to improvements in the field.
He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, colleagues, and all those whose lives were touched by his extraordinary medical care and benevolence.
Our heartfelt sympathies to his family and loved ones. Our deepest sympathies are with you during this difficult time, and we share in your grief. May you find comfort in the memories of his remarkable life, and may his legacy of selflessness and dedication live on in our hearts.
Rest in peace, dear Ted. Your memory will forever be a guiding light in the darkness, and your impact on the world will never be forgotten.

My first contact with Ted was when he called me at home one evening not long after I had started in the Hawke's Bay Ambulance Service to discuss at some length a male driver we had taken to Hastings Hospital the night before.
The lone driver had sustained multiple injuries including extensive leg fractures when his small Mitsubishi truck side-swiped a line-haul truck just before dusk on the Takapau Road in Central Hawke's Bay.
Ted was particularly interested in the dynamics of the impact, and very complimentary of the treatments we had applied at the scene and en-route to Hastings.
It was the first of many professional interactions between us, the start of a great working relationship, and an amazing learning journey for me.
Ted was so easy to spend time with, always willing to support, encourage and mentor, and always made time for Ambulance Service personnel.
Between Ted, Forbes Bennett and some class ICU Nurses, the ICU was always an exceptional learning environment. RIP Ted. I have no doubt your legacy will be well remembered.

I first met Ted in ICU (off Ward 9 Hastings) when I was a nervous student nurse. The skills he taught me in those early years have never left me. His words of wisdom have often visited me throughout my nursing career. So many lives have been touched by his kindness, compassion, skill & dedication.
Thankyou Ted
Love to all his family & friends

RIP Ted. You skill and compassion has saved many lives in HB. You were instrumental in the support along with Forbes Bennet in establishing the HB helicopter rescue trust in the mid 80s ( now Low corp Rescue helicopter). You were a pioneer in establishing the transfer of patients regionally. This service has saved many lives.
Thank you Dr Ted Ward.

Ted - a true kauri in our forest, sowing the seeds. "Look at the patient, stop, pause and look at the patient, don't just look at the machines" Ted you taught me so much over 20 years, both as an ICU nurse and a flight nurse. Your calm, supportive, strong, gentle manner will be missed. As the kauri falls, new seedlings have been sown by you in Intensive care medicine - missed as a colleague, a friend and loved family man.

Ted, you were always there; steady & dependable. You made me feel safe as a nurse. Thank you for your dedication to perfection & guiding my practice. Especially in the middle of the night for not hesitating to take a call, or come running to the rescue. The light has gone out on a truly compassionate leader. We will all miss you. R.I.P. Ted.

It was a November day, and I can recall it clearly because that's when a fresh batch of interns descended upon the hospitals to embark on their in-service training. On that day, we transported a post-cardiac arrest patient in the emergency department.
The patient lay on the resuscitation bed, the monitor displayed a menacing ventricular fibrillation. A new intern, eager and determined, grabbed the defibrillator paddles. With a swift motion, they charged the paddles to 360 joules and prepared to position them on the patient's chest. But just as the intern was about to deliver the life-saving shock, a finger wave from Ted, stopped the procedure . Ted calmly reattached a displaced chest lead back to the electrode. The bewildered intern stood there, clutching fully charged and alarming paddles, their confidence now wavering. Panic was setting in, and they were unsure of their next move.It was then that a nearby nurse quick to respond, reached over and pressed the discharge button. Ted was always close to what was happening around him. Thank you Dr Ted Ward.
